Elephant Cave in Bali - Elephant Cave
A Must-See Historical Site on Tours to Ubud.

Goa Gajah's name is slightly misleading, lending the impression that it's a gigantic dwelling full of elephants. Nevertheless, Elephant Cave 'Elephant Cave' is an archaeological site of significant historical value that makes it a special place to visit. Located on the cool western edge of Bedulu Village, six kilometers from Ubud, you do not need more than an hour to descend to its relic-filled courtyard and view the rock-wall carvings, a central meditational cave, bathing pools and fountains.

What's There? Goa Gajah dates back to the 11th century, built as a spiritual place for meditation. The main grounds are down a flight of steps from the roadside and parking area, which is lined with various art and souvenir shops and refreshment kiosks. Upon reaching the base you will come across a large 'wantilan' meeting hall and an assortment of large old stone carvings, some restored to their former glory. The pool, excavated in 1954, features five out of supposedly seven statues depicting Hindu angels holding vases that act as waterspouts. Various structures reveal Hindu influences dating back to the 10th century, and some relics feature elements of Buddhism dating even earlier to the 8th century. The cave is shallow; Inside are three stone idols each wrapped in red, yellow and black cloths. Black soot lines the cave's walls as result from the current-day incense burning. Several indentations show where meditating priests once sat. The northern side of the complex is dominantly Buddhist while south across the river it's mostly Shivaite. At the southern end are beautiful rice fields and small streams that lead to the Petanu River - another natural site entwined in local legends. Goa Gajah was built on a hillside and 'stream junction', the site was considered sacred and was built for hermetic meditation and prayers.

What's in the name?

Even though the site's name translates into 'Elephant Cave', you will not find any pachyderms here. Petanu River was originally called 'Lwa Gajah', meaning the 'Elephant River', before it came to be called Petanu River. Other sources state that the 'Elephant' or elephant aspect came from the stone figure inside the cave depicting the Hindu lord Ganesh, who is characterized by an elephant's head. Ancient inscriptions also allude to the name Antakunjarapada, which roughly translates to 'elephant's border'. The cave's entrance shows a menacing giant face with its open mouth as the door. Various motifs depicting the forest and animals are carved out of the outer rock face. The giant face was considered to be that of an elephant's. When to visit The complex is open daily 08:00 - 16:00. As with any temple in Bali, women during their periods are forbidden entrance and wearing a sarong and waist sash is a must. These are available for rent at the entrance. Goa Gajah temple celebrates its 'piodalan' temple anniversary on an 'Anggara Kasih Prangbakat' Tuesday on the Balinese 210-day Pawukon calendar, corresponding to different dates on the Gregorian calendar each year (consult a local). Entry tickets are 15,000 rupiah for adults and 7,500 for children.

Tukad Cepung Waterfall Tourist Destination in Bali

Tukad Cepung Waterfall

Tourist Destination in Bali

Address:
Jl. Tembuku, Dusun Penida Kelod,
Tembuku, Bangli, Tembuku, Regency of Bangli, Bali 80671, Indonesia

Operational hour:
Monday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Tuesday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Wednesday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Thursday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Friday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Saturday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Sunday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Water is the most perfect traveler because it is the path itself when it travels. Sometimes we need to follow a path to undertake the most beautiful journey of our life. There are innumerable paths in Bali that will lead you to the world of tourism, you will discover these places. Tukad Cepung Waterfall is one of the places you might want to consider putting on your travel checklist.

Located 30 kilometers north-west of Ubud, you will witness a rare view of a waterfall that should not be missed. Tukad Cepung Waterfall is one of its kind. If you are coming from Denpasar, you can reach Dusun Penida Kelod in Bangli by car or motorbike in about two hours. Local buses leaving from Denpasar can also drop you at Bangli, and then you can trek your way to Tukad Cepung Waterfall. Alternatively, you can book a one-day tour with one of the agencies in Bali.

Tukad Cepung Waterfall still remains as the best virgin waterfall of Bali. The fact that this spot is not known to a lot of people and still not under the commercial tourist spots, you are not under any obligations to pay anything to enter area. However, since the area is well-maintained by the local villagers and some of them contribute in showing and / or explaining the waterfall to the visitors, it would be nice if you give a tip so they can continue to maintain this hidden spot.

Tukad Cepung Waterfall has mesmerized everyone who has managed to spot it. Well-guarded by the cliffs, this waterfall is difficult to locate for the first time visitor. A few hundred stairs down the cliff is worth the effort once you arrive at the destination. The circular cliffs give you the feeling of being in a cave, while the open sky right from where the waterfall emerges, gives you the most enchanting view. The sunlight falls on the glistering waterfall creating a rainbow, which feels as though it is projected right up to you. If you have never seen water flowing from the sky, then this would be your chance. Unlike any other waterfalls in Bali, Tukad Cepung Waterfall does not flow into a river, stream or jungle, but it flows gently down the cliffs. The river can be seen from up above, meanwhile the waterfall can be seen once you walk down the stairs and into the cliff.

Since the water gets accumulated within the cliffs, it gets really deep during the rainy seasons. For that reason, it is not recommended to visit Tukad Cepung Waterfall during monsoons. But during other seasons, you can stand and observe the water neatly flowing down and making a narrow stream inside the cliff. This place is comparatively cooler and offers an immense sense of peace and tranquility.

Bring your bathing suits when you visit this place because once you see this magical waterfall, you will most definitely be tempted to go in and embrace it. You will find some of the visitors standing under the waterfall and having a good time splashing water. Since the place is well-maintained, you should expect to see a clean and hygienic surrounding area. Try to live in the moment by relaxing near the waterfall, listening to the water flowing and gazing at the amazing rainbow of color created by the sunlight. There is a quote, "Many quiet rivers start from noisy waterfalls, but none of them jumps and does not foam up to the sea. But it is often a sign of great peace of mind, and hidden forces. "Tukad Cepung Waterfall.

After several hours of being one with nature, on your way back home, you can make a few stops around the area. Tukad Cepung Waterfall is close to Pura Dalem Penida Kelod, which is also known as the Temple of Death. It is a place of pilgrimage for those seeking protection from sickness and evil. You can also pay a visit to the temple of Ratu Gede Pancering Jagat in Trunyan, which is famous for its megalithic 4-meter high statue and the "Barong Brutuk" dance performance. If you wish to take some local souvenirs, the roads around Kintamani offer you good local shopping experience as well as eating spots. You may need this after a day-long track in Bangli.

WATERFALLS NEARBY
Two more waterfalls in this area are Tibumana Waterfall and Kanto Lampo Waterfall is a 20-meter high twin waterfall with a calm shallow pool beneath, while Kanto Lampo Waterfall is a newly formed waterfall which flows through the lush forests of Bangli. You can follow the forest trail not only to enjoy the waterfalls but to stop and fish for eels and other small fish. You can also visit a cave which is normally used for meditation by local people. All these activities are interesting treks for family with little kids.

Goa Rang Reng waterfall is visited by many local, domestic and foreign travelers. When compared to the others, this waterfall is very different. The water runs between the rocks so as to create a peaceful atmosphere. Besides, the waterfall is not so steep, and the flow is not so heavy. Thus, it feels quiet and comfortable.
Unique view appears when the water runs through the rocks overgrown by moss, so that it appears between the black of stone, green of moss and clarity of water. When wishing to take a bath, visitors must be careful because the stones are slippery with moss. Interestingly, on the left side of the waterfall there is a cave named Goa Rang Reng. On that account, this attraction is called the Goa Rang Reng waterfall.

To get there, visitors can pass through the side street. To the left side of the waterfall, there is a dry road with a rope that can be used to get to the cave. People should not go into the cave because it is made sacred. In front of the cave, there are springs, while in the upstream sits a tributary. In the meantime, above the waterfall there are lots of teak trees and other native trees.
In the past, this place is not so well known. It is said that after a major religious ceremony, the waterfall is realized to be very nice. It happens because of the help of technology, so that the news spread easily. This location was once covered with shrubs and shade trees. The water also looks ordinary. However, it has now become a tourist attraction visited by many travelers. They do not just take photographs, but also have shower.

Due to many visitors, this attraction is then equipped with facilities such as changing room. There is also a rubber tire rental for swimming offered at IDR 10,000. During the moment of holidays, grade promotion and Sundays, many local people throng this attraction. Besides, foreign travelers also take shower or just take pictures. Road access to the location is very nice and relatively safe. There are some stalls at the location where you can drink and have meals. To enter this waterfall attraction, visitors just need to pay donation, while parking service is still free. Unfortunately, this is the place to be with cars, so that visitors coming with a car must park theirs rather far in front of the highway.

Here, visitors can take pictures or selfie. “This location is also good for location of pre-wedding photo session,” said Sudarpa while pointing out a unique location to take pictures.

Travelers from Europe, Australia and Asia mostly prefer this location. They mingle with domestic travelers from Surabaya, Jakarta, Kalimantan and Flores. Together with children, relatives and friends, they play with rocks, feel the coolness of water and walk on the bamboo bridge. “On a normal day, more visitors are foreigners. But on national holidays, they will be usually dominated by domestic travelers,” he said.

Sudarpa added that the location of Blangsinga waterfall was formerly renowned as a place to play bungee jumping. This object is managed by Blangsinga customary village, but its operation is entrusted to 11 professionals consisting of local villagers. “The waterfall was initially favored by cycling travelers, now it has been well-known and crowded,” he explained.
